Turn any SVG into an SF Symbol.

Symbolsmith converts your vector icons into ready-to-ship SF Symbols templates, with every weight and every rendering mode. What takes minutes of fiddly grid-work by hand happens in seconds here, for one icon or a whole batch at once.

One universal app for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Why a symbol, not just an SVG?

An SF Symbol is not just an icon file. It behaves like a character in the system font, so it adapts to context in ways a raw SVG never will.

Scales with your text

A symbol tracks font size and Dynamic Type, sitting on the baseline next to a label at any size. An SVG is a fixed box you place and re-place by hand.

Matches the font weight

Nine weights from Ultralight to Black, so the icon's stroke matches the text beside it instead of looking too heavy or too thin.

Recolors itself

It adapts to light and dark mode, the tint color, selection, and disabled states automatically. No second asset, no manual recoloring.

Modes and variable color

Hierarchical, palette, multicolor, and value-driven fills like a progress or signal meter, all from a single file.

It can animate

SF Symbol effects such as bounce, pulse, and replace work in SwiftUI and UIKit. A static SVG cannot do that.

One asset, everywhere

No @1x/@2x/@3x and no separate light and dark files. The same symbol stays razor sharp across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Some places only take a symbol

Menus and context menus, toolbars and tab bars, Home Screen quick actions, widgets, and Control Center controls are all designed around symbols. Several of them take a symbol by name, so a raw SVG is not even an option. The rest expect one so the icon aligns to the label, scales with it, and tints correctly. Either way, putting your own glyph there means shipping a custom symbol, which is exactly what Symbolsmith makes.

When to reach for a symbol

  • Icons set inline with text: buttons, labels, list rows, and menus
  • Tab bars, toolbars, and navigation that should match Apple's built-in glyphs
  • A shared icon set or design system used across more than one Apple platform
  • Replacing a custom icon font with native, tintable glyphs
  • Anywhere the icon should follow weight, color, and accessibility settings

For a full-color illustration or a logo that has to look identical everywhere, a plain image asset is still fine. For interface glyphs, a symbol is almost always the better fit, and Symbolsmith gets you there in seconds.

Real symbols, without the busywork

Every weight, the correct cap-height metrics, and clean rendering-mode layers, all generated for you instead of assembled by hand.

A live preview with real metrics

See the glyph the way SF Symbols does, with cap-height, baseline, and margin guides. Switch to Text mode to check it next to real type, or Onionskin to overlay it on a reference symbol.

Every weight, Ultralight to Black

Export all nine weights from a single drawing using a stroke ramp, or attach your own Ultralight and Black masters to interpolate the in-betweens.

All five rendering modes

Monochrome, Hierarchical, Palette, Multicolor, and Variable, each previewed faithfully so you know exactly what ships.

Strokes and fills, your way

Outline filled shapes into clean line art, normalize stroke widths, set the exact line weight in points, and keep or drop background shapes.

Optical controls

Rotate, flip, and nudge the artwork, or fit it within bounds so wide and rotated icons stay balanced against text.

Export everywhere

A template SVG, a .symbolset for Xcode, an .xcassets catalog for a whole library, or a rendered PNG preview. Whatever your workflow needs.

Safe to ship in your app

Symbolsmith writes its own clean-room template. No Apple files are bundled, so the output is safe to use in a paid app. Prefer your own base template? Bring it.

Your library, in sync

Group symbols into projects, search and tag them, and let iCloud keep everything in sync across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Private by design

Every conversion runs on your device. There are no servers, no accounts, and no tracking.

A real time saver, especially in bulk

Hand-building a single symbol is slow and easy to get wrong. Across a folder of icons it turns into days. Symbolsmith does the whole set at once.

By hand, per icon
  • Export a blank template from the SF Symbols app
  • Drop in your artwork and scale it onto the cap-height grid
  • Line it up to the baseline and side margins
  • Rebuild the artwork at every weight
  • Annotate layers for hierarchical and palette modes
  • Name it and save a .symbolset, then repeat for the next icon
With Symbolsmith
  • Drop in one icon or a whole folder at once
  • Every glyph is placed, sized, and weighted automatically
  • Layers are annotated for each rendering mode
  • Export one symbol, or a full .xcassets catalog in a single step

One icon is a few minutes by hand. A set of a hundred is a week. Symbolsmith does either in seconds, then exports the whole library as one asset catalog.

From file to symbol in three steps

1

Import

Drag in an SVG, paste one from the clipboard, or open a file. Symbolsmith reads the vector artwork and shows it instantly.

2

Adjust

Set the weight, rendering mode, strokes, and sizing. The preview updates live, with cap-height and baseline guides so you can fine-tune the fit.

3

Export

Send the template straight to the SF Symbols app, drop a .symbolset into Xcode, or export a whole catalog at once.

What you make is yours

Symbolsmith processes every file locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account to create, and there is no analytics or tracking of any kind. Your library syncs through your own private iCloud, not our servers.
